Frequently Asked
Questions (Grooming):
How often should I have my dog groomed?
Dogs with coats that need clipping (i.e. terriers, poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs, etc.) should be groomed every 6-8 weeks and regularly brushed in between. Breeds that can be maintained with regular brushing (i.e. German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers) can be groomed every 3-4 months.
All breeds of dogs require
grooming. By having your dog professionally groomed,
you are taking excellent care of the skin, coat, nails, ears and
many other grooming requirements.
Can I stay for my dog's grooming?
Dogs are usually more anxious when their owners are present. It
is therefore preferable that you leave and allow the professional
to do her job.
The nails look long. Were they cut?
If a dog’s nails have not been maintained with regular cuts,
the “quick” (the vein inside the nail) will bleed if
the nail is cut too short. We can only cut to where the vein is.
Regular visits will ensure the nails are kept short and manageable.
Consider having your dog's nails cut every few weeks.
My dog’s nails are so sharp after
they are cut. Can this be avoided?
After cutting, the nails have a fresh edge which is extremely sharp.
We can eliminate this by grinding the nails. There is an additional
charge for this service.
Should I have my dog shaved in the summer?
Won't he be cooler?
We never recommend shaving any breed not meant to be clipped. The undercoat provides warmth
in the winter and insulates against heat in the summer. Your dog
will be comfortable no matter what the season, provided his coat
is kept clean and well brushed so dead hair does not block air circulation.
Shaving a dog is a very risky procedure - the coat often does not
grow back normally; it can become dry, patchy and sparse. It can
take years to get the coat back to a healthy natural state.
